Mo flashing a BMW E36 with a “canned” tune.

Canned Tunes

Canned tunes (also called ‘Off-the-Shelf’) are maps that tuners have created for standard enhancements for a particular car.

Companies like RaceChips, APR, Dinan are some examples of companies that provide these ‘base maps’, which clients can purchase from a certified dealer.

These standard maps consist of fuel tables, ignition tables, etc. matched to your current engine configuration. The hope is the tuner has worked with many cars like yours, and knows a safe range for these values in order to give you the efficiency gains that you are looking for.

This is why it is important to work with a tuner that you know has the experience and knowledge about your platform.

If you are going to keep the level of enhancements to your vehicle to a minimum, a canned tune is a cost effective way to get some nice gains.

The tunes are generally “flashed” at the certified dealer.

However, if you are looking for serious efficiency enhancements, then continue reading to the custom tune section.
