What is a dyno tune?

The dynamometer (dyno) is an absolutely essential part of modifying any vehicle, as the tuner that operates it can dial in your ride to exact specifications. There is a slew of things to consider before you have your car dyno-tuned, the most important being that you disclose all current modifications on your vehicle as well as future plans for others. This is because the tuner needs to base his/her calibrations upon what the car currently has. When you tune a vehicle, you are undoubtedly increasing strain on your engine, along with your turbo/supercharger (if applicable). It is important to be sure your engine is capable of doing what the tuner will be asking it to do BEFORE booking dyno time. Things like forged rods and pistons, among other engine upgrades, ensure that your vehicle can handle the added stress of a more aggressive tune. The last thing either party wants is to do spend precious dyno time diagnosing issues, or worse, blowing the engine because it could not handle the stress/power being added to it. After you address these checkpoints, do some research about tuners in your area. You’ll want to choose the tuner that has the best dyno setup for your vehicle. Also, make sure the person that will be tuning your vehicle has good reviews, do not let just anyone tune your car. Shop around, weigh your options, and book a slot. Dyno time does not come cheap, but if done properly, the benefits are easily justified.
